Osteoarthritis is a disease that causes inflammation and the breakdown of cartilage in the major weight-bearing joints (hips, knees, spine, and hands). Cartilage is a smooth tissue that protects the ends of bones and facilitates joint movement.
Treatment and Medication:
- Take medications according to your doctor’s instructions, preferably with a glass of water or other fluids immediately after meals.
- Drink plenty of fluids (2–3 liters daily) to reduce stomach discomfort and prevent medication deposits in the urinary tract.
- Inform your doctor if you experience side effects such as nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, or changes in urine color.
- Use warm compresses on joints and muscles before exercise to relieve pain and stimulate circulation.
- Use cold compresses on joints and muscles after exercise to reduce swelling and inflammation for a short period.
Diet and Nutrition:
- Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, and avoid foods high in saturated fats.
- Follow a balanced diet to maintain a healthy weight, as this can help reduce joint pain.
Activity and Exercise:
- Perform exercises that help reduce pain and improve joint and muscle mobility according to your doctor’s or physiotherapist’s guidance, such as walking, cycling, or exercising in a warm pool.
- Start with light activities and gradually increase intensity. Stop any activity if you experience pain.
Preventive Measures:
- Visit your doctor regularly and undergo the necessary examinations without delay, as these check-ups help your doctor assess the progression of the disease.
