Donated blood is a lifeline for patients suffering from critical health conditions or undergoing complex surgical procedures. To ensure the safety of donors and maintain their health, it is important to follow certain dietary and health guidelines before and after donating blood.
Before Blood Donation:
- Maintain good health: Make sure you are in good health and free from any illnesses.
- Get enough sleep: Ensure you get adequate sleep the night before donating so your body is well prepared.
- Eat a healthy meal: Have a balanced and nutritious meal before donation, and avoid fatty foods that may affect blood quality.
- Drink plenty of water: Stay well hydrated by drinking sufficient amounts of water.
After Blood Donation:
- Fluids: Drink plenty of fluids to compensate for the blood loss. Please note that coffee and tea are not counted as beneficial fluids due to their caffeine content.
- Rest: Avoid exercising or lifting heavy objects for approximately 24 hours after donation.
- Managing dizziness: If you feel dizzy, lie down and raise your legs to improve blood flow to the brain.
- Eat iron-rich foods: To replace lost iron, consume foods rich in iron such as:

- Spinach
- Beets
- Raisins
