In a rare medical achievement, the medical team at Care Medical successfully saved the life of a newborn baby girl who was suffering from a rare congenital malformation in her left lung, characterized by large cysts that caused severe respiratory failure, a mediastinal shift, and significant pressure on the heart and the opposite lung.
The surgery was carried out in two stages due to the critical nature of the case. It began with an emergency intervention in the intensive care unit, followed by the removal of the lower lobe of the left lung in the operating room. The procedure lasted three hours and was successfully completed without complications.
Advanced techniques were employed, including high-frequency mechanical ventilation and nitric oxide gas support. The baby was closely monitored until she gradually improved and was able to come off the ventilators within two weeks.
The medical team was led by Dr. Fahad bin Abdulrahman Al-Aql, Consultant of Neonatology and Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, alongside Dr. Mohammed Al-Muhaidl, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, and Dr. Abdulmajid Al-Hudhaifi, Consultant in Pediatric and Neonatal Anesthesia. The collaboration among these specialized disciplines was key to saving the baby’s life and successfully managing one of the most complex neonatal surgical cases.
This success reflects the integration of highly qualified medical staff and advanced facilities at Care Medical Hospital, making it one of the few centers capable of handling such delicate and complex cases.
